Hear historian Bonnie Clementsson talk about her new book, Fängslade öden, which is about convicts at Carlsten. Who were they? Why did they end up there? And what was everyday life like for a fortress prisoner?
From the book:
When the life sentence was passed, 'a cold sweat' went through Nicolaus' body, but he made an effort not to show anything outwardly. He was proud and took pride in never showing weakness or fear in front of guards and judges. Nicolaus Magnus Söderman had not yet turned 21 when he was sentenced to life imprisonment in March 1848. Despite a good start in life, he ended his days in a fortress prison.
